In North India, winter is the best flower season of the year. The same balcony that struggles in May's 45°C heat can be full of petunias, calendula and pansies from December to March. The trick is timing: plant between late September and mid-November so plants settle in before the cold nights of late December.

Why plant winter flowers now?

Winter annuals grow roots in the mild weather of October and November, then flower through the cool months. Plant too late (after mid-December) and they stay small; plant too early (August) and the humid heat stresses them. How to plant winter flowers in pots

1. Pick the sunniest spot. Most winter flowers need at least 5–6 hours of direct sun. In winter, the sun is lower, so south-facing balconies get the most light.
2. Use the right pot. An 8–10 inch pot suits one petunia, calendula or dianthus. Make sure it has a drainage hole. Terracotta pots breathe well in winter.
3. Mix light soil. Roughly 50% garden soil, 30% compost or vermicompost and 20% sand or cocopeat keeps roots airy.
4. Plant at the same depth as in the nursery pot and water well once.
5. Keep in light shade for 2–3 days after planting, then move into full sun.

Watering in winter: the most common mistake

Cold soil dries slowly. Watering daily, as you did in summer, leads to root rot. Water only when the top inch of soil feels dry — often every 2–3 days in November and every 3–5 days in foggy January weeks. Water in the morning so leaves dry before the cold night.

Feeding and keeping them flowering

• Pinch once: when young plants are about 10 cm tall, pinch the growing tip. They branch out and give more flowers.
• Deadhead weekly: remove faded flowers so the plant keeps making new buds.
• Feed every 2–3 weeks with a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants or a handful of vermicompost.
