Fiddle Leaf Fig: avoiding the most common mistakes

Why fiddle leaf figs drop leaves, get brown spots or stop growing — and the stable routine that keeps them healthy.

2 min read

The fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata) is beautiful but famously fussy. Most problems come from a handful of avoidable mistakes. Get these right and it becomes a steady, tall indoor tree.

Mistake 1: Not enough light

Fiddle leaf figs need bright light — a spot right next to a large east or west window, or a few hours of gentle morning sun. In a dim corner they drop lower leaves and stop growing.

Mistake 2: Moving it around

This plant hates change. Moving it to a new spot, or rotating it too often, can cause leaf drop. Choose a bright spot and leave it there. Rotate a quarter turn once a month at most.

Mistake 3: Overwatering

  • Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry — roughly weekly in summer, every 10–14 days in winter.
  • Water thoroughly and let it drain; never let the pot sit in water.
  • Brown spots in the middle of leaves, especially on lower leaves, usually mean root rot from overwatering.

Mistake 4: Cold drafts and AC

Keep it away from AC vents, coolers and cold windows in winter. Sudden cold causes leaves to drop.

Mistake 5: Dusty leaves

The large leaves collect dust quickly in NCR homes. Wipe them every two weeks with a damp cloth so they can use all the light they get.

Mistake 6: Repotting too often or into a huge pot

Repot only every 1–2 years into a pot 2–5 cm wider, in spring or early autumn. A pot that is too big stays wet and invites root rot.

Mistake 7: Feeding in winter

Feed monthly from March to October. Stop in winter when growth slows.

A stable routine

  • Bright spot, same place, all year.
  • Water when the top 2 inches are dry.
  • Wipe leaves twice a month.
  • Feed monthly in the growing season.
  • Check under leaves for pests every few weeks.

Similar plants that are easier

If a fiddle leaf fig feels like too much work, the rubber plant gives a similar bold, glossy look and is far more forgiving in Indian homes.

Pets

Ficus plants have a sap that irritates pets' mouths and stomachs. Keep them out of reach.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my fiddle leaf fig dropping leaves?

Usually a move to a new spot, a cold draft or overwatering. Keep it in one bright place and water only when the top 2 inches of soil are dry.

What causes brown spots on fiddle leaf fig leaves?

Brown spots in the middle of leaves usually mean root rot from overwatering; crispy brown edges usually mean underwatering or very dry air.

How much light does a fiddle leaf fig need?

Bright light for most of the day, ideally next to a large window with some gentle morning sun.
