Office Plants: 7 Checks for Indian Workspaces
Choose plants for the real light, AC conditions and care routine in your office.

Office plants need suitable light, sensible watering and protection from direct AC airflow. Choose the position before the plant, keep water away from equipment, and assign one person to care for the arrangement. These seven checks help Indian workplaces plan a practical setup.
An attractive office plant display should work on an ordinary working day, including when blinds are closed, meetings fill the room and the office shuts for a weekend. The best choice is therefore a plant that suits the actual environment and care routine, rather than a variety selected only from a photograph.
1. Check light at desk height
Observe the proposed position during working hours. A reception beside a glass entrance, a window-side desk and a meeting room deep inside the building can offer very different light. Tinted glazing, outdoor shade and permanent blinds all matter. Do not judge the room only by how bright ceiling lights look.
Keep a short record of direct sunlight, filtered daylight and long shaded periods. Ask for advice before placing living plants in a windowless room. A suitable grow light may be needed; ordinary office lighting should not automatically be treated as sufficient for every plant.
2. Match the plant to its permanent position
A Raven ZZ plant with dark foliage can be an option for appropriate indoor positions where a restrained shape suits the décor. It stores water and should not be watered simply because another plant nearby needs a drink. Lower light often means the pot dries more slowly.
The variegated Song of India plant is worth considering for a brighter location. Ask about the actual dimensions and care needs before choosing it for a desk or floor position. Neither example is a promise of suitability for every office or a claim of current stock.
Consider leaf spread as well as height. A plant that looks compact when delivered may later lean towards light or extend into the workspace. Allow room for new growth, safe movement and access to inspect the pot.
3. Keep plants out of the AC air stream
Place plants away from air blowing directly from vents. Leaves close to a cooling outlet can experience very different conditions from the rest of the room. Do not respond to dry-looking leaf edges by automatically adding more water; inspect the root-zone moisture and the position first.
Delhi NCR offices may move between strong daytime cooling and warmer conditions after closing. This makes a fixed watering instruction unreliable. Assess the pot, plant and room together, and avoid sudden moves between a cool interior and a hot, exposed outdoor corridor.
4. Design around people and equipment
Floor planters should sit outside door swings, emergency routes and busy paths. Desk pots should leave room for keyboards, paperwork and cleaning. Avoid arrangements directly above sockets or electronics, and choose a stable base that is unlikely to tip when someone moves a chair.
For a reception, one balanced grouping may work better than many scattered pots. A meeting-room plant should not block a screen or camera. If you plan a tall display, check the weight, stability and access requirements before installation.

5. Inspect the inner pot, not just the planter
Decorative planters need a practical drainage arrangement. Where a removable inner pot is used, take it out for watering when possible, allow it to drain and empty the outer cover. Protect flooring without trapping a hidden pool beneath the root ball.
A particular failure mode to watch during the NCR monsoon is repeated topping-up in a dim, cooled room. The surface may appear dry while the lower mix stays wet inside the cover pot. Lift and inspect the inner pot before watering. A neat-looking display can hide soggy roots.
6. Assign one watering owner
Choose one responsible person and a backup for leave days. Multiple colleagues offering a little water can result in frequent watering that nobody records. A simple log should note the date, moisture check and any visible change, rather than instruct everyone to water every Monday.
Check each pot before watering.
Remove water from saucers and cover pots.
Record yellowing leaves or unusual leaf marks.
Keep cleaning chemicals off leaves and potting mix.
Inspect new plants before grouping them with existing plants.
Weekly inspection is a useful organisational habit, but watering frequency must follow the plant's needs. A plant in strong window light and another in a shaded reception may dry at very different rates.
7. Confirm maintenance and handover in writing
Before commissioning a setup, request a list of plants, sizes, quantities and planters. Clarify delivery, installation access, taxes and who waters after handover. If ongoing maintenance is required, specify visit frequency, tasks, materials and reporting separately.
Ask how problems will be reported and who can approve a change in plant position. Do not assume a setup price includes replacement plants, rentals or indefinite maintenance. Clear responsibilities help the arrangement remain manageable after the installation day.
Frequently asked questions
Can plants grow in an air-conditioned office?
Many indoor foliage plants can be suitable when they receive usable light and appropriate care. Keep them away from direct cooling airflow and inspect moisture before watering. Air conditioning alone does not determine suitability: the light, potting mix, plant variety and conditions after office hours also matter.
Which plants are suitable for an office desk?
Choose a plant that fits the desk and the available light without interfering with work. Confirm its eventual spread, pot stability and watering access. Small size alone does not make a plant suitable for a shaded workstation. Ask for options based on photographs of the exact position.
Should office plants be watered before every weekend?
No. Check moisture first and water only when the particular plant needs it. Watering an already wet pot before closing can leave roots sitting in damp mix for days. Assign a backup person for longer holidays and review the plan for the office's actual light and temperature.
What information is needed for an office plant quotation?
Provide the location, photographs, approximate floor area, window positions, AC layout and budget. Mention access hours and who will maintain the plants. Request a written scope covering plants, planters, delivery, installation and any separate maintenance arrangement, with applicable taxes and payment terms clearly stated before approval.
