Cats nibble, puppies dig, and many of India's most popular houseplants are mildly toxic to both. If you share your home with pets, choosing the right plants saves a lot of worry — and a few vet visits.
This list is based on widely used toxicity references such as the ASPCA plant database. If your pet eats any plant and seems unwell, contact your vet.
Pet-safe plants you can buy easily in India
- Spider plant (chlorophytum) — hardy, fast-growing, and non-toxic. Cats love to play with the leaves, so hang it if you want it to stay neat.
- Areca palm — a large, soft palm that is safe around pets.
- Boston fern — loves humidity; great for bathrooms and shaded balconies.
- Calathea — striking patterned leaves; prefers medium light and steady moisture.
- Ponytail palm — a succulent-like plant with a swollen trunk; very low watering.
- Money tree (pachira) — the braided trunk plant, non-toxic to pets.
- Fittonia (nerve plant) — small, colourful and safe; good for terrariums.
Herbs such as basil and mint are also generally considered safe around pets in normal amounts.

These are common in Indian homes but can cause drooling, vomiting, mouth irritation or stomach upset if chewed:

How to keep pets and plants together
- Go vertical: hanging planters and wall shelves keep trailing plants out of reach.
- Cover the soil: a layer of pebbles stops cats digging and dogs sniffing.
- Give them their own greens: a pot of cat grass or wheatgrass often distracts cats from your houseplants.
- Watch new plants for a week: pets are most curious about anything new.
- Pick heavy pots: ceramic or terracotta pots are harder to knock over than light plastic ones.
What to do if your pet chews a toxic plant
Remove any plant pieces from the mouth, give fresh water, note which plant it was, and call your vet — especially if there is repeated vomiting, drooling, swelling or lethargy. Cycas (sago palm) needs urgent veterinary attention.
