A yellow leaf is a plant's way of saying something is wrong — but it can mean several different things. The pattern of yellowing is the clue. Here are the eight most common causes and how to fix each.
1. Overwatering (the most common cause)
Signs: lower leaves turn yellow and soft, soil stays wet for days, sometimes a musty smell or black mushy roots.
Fix: stop watering until the top inch (or more) of soil is dry. Make sure the pot has a drainage hole and is not sitting in a saucer of water. If roots are black and mushy, trim them and repot in fresh, dry mix. Our watering guide explains the finger test.
2. Underwatering
Signs: leaves yellow and then turn crispy brown, soil pulls away from the pot edge, the plant droops.
Fix: water slowly until it drains, or soak the pot in a bucket for 20 minutes if the soil has become hard. Water more regularly, especially in April–June.
3. Too little light
Signs: pale yellow-green leaves, long leggy stems leaning towards the window, lower leaves dropping.
Fix: move the plant closer to a window. If the room is dark, switch to low-light plants — see best indoor plants for Delhi NCR flats.
4. Too much direct sun
Signs: bleached yellow or white patches on leaves facing the sun, sometimes with brown scorched edges.
Fix: move indoor plants out of harsh afternoon sun, especially from April to June. Outdoor plants may need a shade net in peak summer.
5. Nutrient deficiency
Signs: older leaves turn evenly yellow (often nitrogen), or leaves yellow between green veins (often iron or magnesium). Common in plants that have not been repotted or fed for a long time.
Fix: feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser or vermicompost every 3–4 weeks during the growing season. Repot plants that have been in the same soil for over two years.
6. Pests
Signs: yellow speckles or stippling, sticky leaves, fine webbing (spider mites), white cottony clusters (mealybugs) or tiny green insects on new growth (aphids).
Fix: isolate the plant, wipe or wash off pests, and spray neem oil solution weekly for three weeks. Check under leaves — that is where most pests hide.
7. Cold drafts and AC
Signs: sudden yellowing and leaf drop after the plant was moved near an AC vent, a cooler or a cold window in winter.
Fix: keep plants out of the direct airflow of ACs and coolers and away from cold glass on winter nights.
8. Natural ageing and transplant shock
Signs: one or two of the oldest, lowest leaves slowly turn yellow while new growth looks healthy; or a few leaves yellow in the week after repotting or delivery.
Fix: nothing — remove the yellow leaves and keep caring as normal.
Quick diagnosis table

| Lower leaves; soil bone dry | Underwatering |
| Whole plant pale, leggy | Too little light |
| Patches on sun-facing leaves | Sun scorch |
| Between green veins | Nutrient deficiency |

Frequently asked questions
Should I cut off yellow leaves?
Yes. A fully yellow leaf will not turn green again. Remove it with clean scissors so the plant puts energy into healthy growth, and fix the underlying cause.
Why are my money plant leaves turning yellow?
Usually overwatering or low light. Let the soil dry out between waterings and move it to bright indirect light.
Can too much fertiliser cause yellow leaves?
Yes. Over-fertilising burns roots and can cause yellow leaves with brown tips. Flush the soil with plenty of water and feed less often.
